The ICOMOS Charter for Interpretation and Presentation of Cultural Heritage Sites

Why is heritage interpretation important?

1. Interpretation contributes to the understanding of values and significance of a heritage site and in so far contributes to its qualitative presentation. It helps to improve understanding of various aspects of heritage.

2. The two elements of entertainment and education are brought together through interpretation in such a way that a visitor receives a unique experience. The visitor is motivated to return and/or stay longer at a site. Higher visitor numbers mean more proceeds, which are available for the maintenance of the site.

3. Interpretation raises awareness of and attracts attention to the complex aspects of conservation and management of a heritage site. By making appeals to the feelings and emotions of visitors, volunteers can be recruited, who can contribute through donations and other voluntary activities in preserving the site.
4. While the significance of the site will be identified and its values clarified, it is possible by means of interpretation to increase the appreciation and respect of visitors and the public for historic environment. This leads to a more careful and prudent behaviour while visiting a site and dealing with cultural objects. Vandalism and defacing can be minimized.

5. A high quality interpretation of culture heritage sites raises public awareness and emphasizes the unique features of a site, making it different from many other historic places in the area.
